Distribution:- Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada.
Tree size:- 25-35m tall, 1-2m trunk diameter.
Average dried weight:- 44 IBS/ft3e (700 kg/m3).
Colour / Appearance:-
-
- Heartwood is a light to a medium brown, commonly a reddish coast.
- Nearly white to light brown, sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood.
- Quarter sawn sections display prominent ray fleck patterns.
- Conversely, white oak tends to be slightly more olive-coloured, but is by no means a reliable method of determining the type of Oak.
Grain / Texture:-

- Grain is straight, with a coarse uneven texture.
- The pores are so large and open that it is said that a person can blow into one end in the wood, and air will come out from the other end, provided that the grain runs straight enough.
End Grain:-

- Ring-porous, 2-4 raws of large, exclusively solitary early wood pores, numerous small latewood pores in radial arrangement, tyloses absent, growth rings distinct, rays large and visible without lens Apo tracheal parenchyma diffuse in aggregates (short lines between rays).
Resistance:-
-
- Rated as non-durable to perishable, with poor insect resistance.
- Stains when in contact with water (particularly along with porous growth ring area).
- Red Oak does not have the level of decay and not resistance the White Oak possess.
Working Ability:-
-
- Produces good result with hand and machine tools.
- Has moderately high shrinkage values, resulting in mediorate dimensional stability, especially in flat sawn boards.
- Can react with iron (particularly when wet) and cause staining and discolouration.
- Responds well to steam bending.
- Glues, stains and finishes well.

- Has a tell-tale smell that is common to most Oaks, most find it appealing.
