Distribution:- Eastern United States.

Tree size:- 30-37m tall, 0.6-1m trunk diameter.

Density:- 610 kg/m3

Colour / Appearance:-

    • Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darken brown strikes.
    • Colour can sometimes have a grey, purple or reddish coast.
    • Sapwood is yellow-grey nearly white.
    • Figured grain patterns such as curl, crutch, and burl are also seen.

Grain / Texture:-

    • Grain is usually straight, but can be irregular, has medium texture and moderate natural luster.

End Grain:-

    • Semi-ring porous, large earlywood pores grading to medium latewood pores, solitary and radial multiples of 2-3, tyloses occasionally to abundantly present, growth rings distinct, medium rays barely visible without lens, normal spacing, parenchyma diffuse in aggregates (sometimes very faint and barely visible even with lens) and band end (marginal).

Resistance:-

    • American Walnut is rated as very durable in terms of decay resistance, though it is susceptible to insect attack.

Working Ability:-

    • Typically easy to work provided the grain is straight and regular.
    • Planer tear out can sometimes be a problem when surfacing pieces with irregular or figured grain.
    • Glues, stains, and finishes well (though Walnut is rarely stained), responds well to steam bending.

Oder:-

    • American Walnut has a faint, mild oder when being worked.

Common Uses:-

    • Furniture, cabinetry, gunstocks, interior paneling, veneer, turned items, and other small wooden objects and novelties.
    • Its cooperation working characteristics, coupled with its rich brown colouration puts the wood in a class by itself among temperate-zone hardwoods.
    • To cap it off, the wood also has good dimensional stability, shack residence, and strength properties.
